Trịnh Kim Vinh was born in Hanoi on 1 January 1932. She studied at the Vietnam Fine Art College from 1964-69. Subsequently, she became a teacher at the college prior to undertaking postgraduate studies in lithography in the former Democratic Republic of Germany. She studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Dresden between 1970-73. Her husband served as the Minister of Culture and Information in the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. During the late 1960s, she sketched and painted mainly female soldiers and women who were involved in the war effort.

In 1983, she won second prize at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts exhibition. In the early 1990s, her work was displayed in the travelling exhibition ‘As Seen by Both Sides’, which toured cities in the United States and Vietnam. Her work has also been exhibited in Hamburg in 2000 as part of an exhibition of women artists from Ho Chi Minh City. Her artworks can be found in the permanent collections of the Southern Women Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, and the Vietnam Fine Art Museum in Hanoi, amongst others. She teaches at Ho Chi Minh City Fine Art University.
